KIDS COMEDY CLASSES

Sunday afternoon theater classes for ages 9-13

Arcade Academy Kids Comedy Classes offer kids a weekly exploration of improv comedy basic skills, offered as seven, 2.5-hour classes for ages 9 to 13. Perfect for everyone from the aspiring actor, to the class clown, to the thoughtful observer–Kids Comedy Classes are open to all personalities and experience levels! Improvisation isn’t just for future comedians. Kids will gain confidence in navigating challenges, public speaking, critical thinking, and working as a team, all while laughing and playing fun improv games (similar to those seen on TV’s Whose Line Is It Anyway?)

Welcome to the Sandbox!

What makes the Arcade Academy Kids Comedy Classes special is that our “sandbox” approach is designed for each specific age group to play and explore improv comedy on an ongoing basis. You can come back time and time again and still learn something brand new. It’s what we love about improv – the sand we use is always the same, but the creations are constantly changing!

We offer three sessions of classes for ages 9-13 all focusing on the fundamental improv skills of “Yes, And…,” supporting and listening to your team, and having fun! Each session will focus on a specific aspect of the art of improv. While you do not have to take one to participate in another, we certainly encourage you to experience all three. Go with us on a journey as we learn how we work together (Ensemble), where we can go (Environment), and who we can become (Character)!

These classes are ensemble driven and not simply a progression of difficulty. Honing and mastering improv comedy skills is all about practice and repetition. So our comedy classes can be taken and retaken. Each session, our teachers will present both brand new games AND familiar games so our students can continue to challenge themselves but also have the chance to fine tune previously learned techniques and concepts. Every session culminates with a class show at the Arcade the final week! 

Classes are 7 weeks
Registration fee: $200 per child ($180 early bird rate)

Class size: max 12 children
Partial refunds are available with a $50 cancellation fee until 2 weeks before the start of class, after which refunds will be unavailable

Session 1: Ensemble

ENSEMBLE: How we work together. Students will strive to connect with their fellow improvisers to create a “Group Mind” that encourages support and active listening. During this session, we will focus on games and exercises that strengthen the ensemble. Two heads are better than one: imagine what can happen with twelve!

January 21 – March 4

Session 2: Environment

ENVIRONMENT: Where we can go. School, the post office, Texas, space – nowhere is off limits in improv! Through improv games and activities, we will be challenging students to think about how different locations may affect the circumstances of a situation or the behavior of our characters. Who knows where we’ll end up?

April 8 – May 20

Session 3: Character

CHARACTER: Who we can become. In improv, there is no telling the characters that we might meet on stage! Through voice and movement exercises, students will learn to create unique and interesting characters. This class will focus on games that allow our young improvisers to be whoever they want to be!

September 30 – November 11

Kids Class Pick Up/ Drop Off Information

All classes will take place at Arcade Comedy Theater at 943 Liberty Ave. An attendant at the main box office will be there to sign your child in and out of each class. All students must be picked up by a parent or legal guardian. If your child or teen is going to be signed out by someone other than their parent/legal guardian (babysitters, nannies, carpools etc) Please provide their full names and addresses in an email to the instructor. They will be asked to provide valid ID matching the information provided via email/handwritten note from the camper’s parent/ legal guardian. In the case of high school-aged students, they may provide their own transportation, sign themselves in and out of camp with permission given by parent/ legal guardian.

Late Pick-Up: Parents or guardians are expected to arrive before or at the end of the class day. Arcade allows for a 10-minute grace period for pick-up, and on the 11th minute the Arcade will need to charge $1 for every additional minute. We understand that parking and traffic downtown can be unpredictable, so please allow yourself time to arrive promptly. Late fees will be collected the day they occur.

*Proof of Pennsylvania child abuse clearances and Act 114 criminal history clearances for instructors and teaching assistants available upon request.

What to Bring:

We recommend that everyone “dresses to improvise” everyday. We will be dancing, running, jumping, groovin’ and movin’ so students should wear whatever allows them to be active.

Attendees should also bring:

  • Water bottle
  • Notebook and pen
  • A positive attitude
  • Their Imagination

Arcade Academy Teen Comedy Classes offer teens and tweens a weekly exploration of improv comedy basic skills, offered as six 2.5-hour classes ages 14 to 17. Perfect for everyone from the aspiring actor, to the class clown, to the thoughtful observer–Teen Comedy Classes are open to all personalities and experience levels! Improvisation isn’t just for future comedians. Kids will gain confidence in navigating challenges, public speaking, critical thinking, and working as a team, all while laughing and playing fun improv games (similar to those seen on TV’s Whose Line Is It Anyway?)

In this six week course, students aged 14-17 will learn and practice the basic fundamentals of improvisational comedy. Using exercises and games, they will explore stage performance, storytelling, and ensemble collaboration. Students will build skills in the art of “yes, and” (agreement and extension) in a positive, supportive environment as participants work as a team to put together a show. All exercises used during class are designed to further your child’s ability to feel comfortable on stage, enhance their social awareness and creative thinking, and give them a boost in their confidence, all while having lots of fun! The course will conclude with a student performance at the theater. No prior improv experience is required.

A SUMMER COMEDY CAMP FOR KIDS

Let your young improviser’s imagination run wild in a week-long exploration of the art of comedy. Perfect for everyone from the aspiring actor, to the class clown, to the thoughtful observer — Summer Comedy Camp is open to all personalities and experience levels! Improvisation isn’t just for future comedians.

Participants will develop important skills both on and off the stage, including listening, supporting, give and take, saying “yes, and” to new ideas — all in a fun, welcoming environment. All through the lens of improv, your student will gain confidence in navigating challenges, public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork.

In addition to learning the building blocks of improv from the best in the biz, this summer camp will also give students a little taste of a variety of comedic forms. Scripted acting, sketch writing, and more!

Snacks & Allergy Information

During the day we will break for lunch brought from home. Please do not bring any peanuts or peanut products in your lunch. If your child has any allergies or special needs please email the instructor. We will do our best to accommodate your child’s needs and make sure everyone has an educational, safe, and fun time at Summer Comedy Camp!
